#Janathon Day 22: Breaking Habits

A comment from a fellow blogger got me thinking… how long it will take for this healthy living habit to stick? Conventional wisdom says it should take about 21 days, which means I should already be there. Now, if you’re dying for a wee, 21 days is ages but in the grand scheme of things, it’s no time at all! The best guess seems to be about 66 days, but I feel it would be unwise to attribute an exact figure to the process. UCL tells us that duration of habit formation differs depending on who you are and what you are trying to do. It made me wonder, am I trying to form new habits or break old ones? I’m yet to decide – and it’s probably a bit of both – although I didn’t realise some of the old ones were habits until I found myself trying to do them… raiding the fridge 30 seconds after I walk through the front door, for example. Stopping at Bargain Booze on the way home, practically on autopilot… #Janathon is reinforcing the fact that there are no quick fixes. Only determination and sustained effort will bring about meaningful change. So easy does it, another three miles tonight (Movescount). Don’t want to push it!
