Today was a day for our amazing friends (Thelwallfolk) to visit Trentham. It was touch-and-go whether they would make it from the land of monogrammed swimming pools and baby Bentley’s (Cheshire, don’t you know) due to the weather. It had caused chaos in Stoke yesterday, and there was no guarantee that today would be any better. If the BBC was to be believed, we should all have been panic buying milk and generally freaking out… hence, they were understandably cautious.
I opted to go for my Janathon run this morning and check out the road situation (Runkeeper). It was tougher going than yesterday. There had been the freeze, then a partial thaw, and much of the fluffy white stuff from yesterday had been compacted down to a thick layer of white ice. I was ‘slip slidin’ away‘ all over the place, and it made my calves hurt. Most of my effort was expended trying to stay upright! I couldn’t run in the road, as the cars were back up to speed… good news! There were no jackknifed lorries blocking the roads, no broken cars littering the streets, just a bit of slush mixed in with the filth of the road. So I confirmed the state of play, down they came…
It’s always lovely to get together, no matter how briefly. Our friends have a beautiful daughter, who is one and a bit… I noticed today how much she is talking (baby babble) and how expressive she is becoming. They have been a part of Trenthamfolk Junior’s life from the beginning, and have seen him turn from a baby into the Lego obsessed, cheeky little chappy he is today. The Thelwallfolk pose rolled up, and just happened to have a sledge in the boot… coincidence? I think not! We hit the slopes.
What ensued was the typical affair: Dad’s zooming about like kids on Haribo’s, Mum’s looking on aghast… kids hurtling towards cars at 25 mph with no other way of stopping other than hurling themselves off their sledge into the ground… It was enormous fun.
It sees like yesterday that Trenthamfolk Jnr was as small and Miss Thelwallfolk… they grow up so bleeding fast. I’m almost ashamed to say that this was the first time we had been sledging as a family. If I were given the opportunity to live the last few years again, I’d be up that hill hurling my son down it with reckless abandon, both loving every minute. Enjoy it while you can folks… time waits for no man. See you on the slopes tomorrow!
