Blimey, it’s a bit parky out there! Minus three was the general consensus at the club as we gathered for our Tuesday training session. I always have a debate with myself, whether to wait indoors or to stay outside and jump up and down and acclimatise. In the end I opted for the latter and waited in the cold. Not only was it the coldest day of the year to date, it was also the first night of the Trentham Running Club Beginners Course… and not put off by the cold, and to their credit, we actually had some new recruits turn up! Well done folks!
There were also some new faces in Walters group. We could tell they weren’t beginners, as they looked hard as nails, so we welcomed them into our group and hoped we were’t going to be too slow! Walter had decided on a slightly shorter loop tonight, due to a few injury niggles and the icy conditions, and we stuck to the well beaten track. Although, we had forgotten one thing: the FA cup third round replay, being staged on route.
The traffic on the footpaths was getting steadily heavier by mile three as we got closer to the stadium. Red and white stripes were everywhere, but at least we were going with the flow. Once we got to the stadium, we had to negotiate the road… the supporters convoy was in full flow, but we managed to make it across in one piece and headed off towards the town… Into the flow of thousands of football fans, head on.
Tonight Stoke City are at home to Crystal Palace, and it soon became apparent that the Palace away strip is yellow… and there were were, legging it through the crowds, dressed as giant high-viz Banana’s. Heads down folk! As well as freaking unsuspecting people out as we mowed into them at speed, we were also in receipt of a constant stream of comments about away supporters running scared and other such nuggets of razor sharp wit (?). But before too long we were free of the rabble and onto abandoned roads once again.
We got back to the club unscathed, and 6.75 miles down (Runkeeper). A mile or so short of our usual distance, but a good run at a decent pace none the less. After a mile or so, we didn’t notice the cold, and despite having to watch our footing, it was a highly enjoyable Janathon run. I hope Stoke City do well… I wouldn’t like to be sat in a windy stadium on top of a hill for a couple of hours on a night like tonight! Do it for the Fans lads… they’re a hardy bunch. And bloody loud!
