Whoa, am I pooped. This Sunday morning started like any other – awake at 7am, poached eggs on toast for breakfast, hydration drink prepared and all zipped into my running gear. It was a hard frost, so running tights, gloves, buff & and smock were all essential apparel. The turn out at the club was good, and about 20 of us hit the road for a roller coaster of a run. ‘Crazy Walt’ and ‘Insane Greg’ had worked out a route from the club, down through the city limits, through forest, country house estates and onto Barlaston Downs. An area of outstanding natural beauty.
The Downs (also known as Downs Banks) are essentially foot hills to the Peaks. Neither lowland nor moorland… they are a sort of heath, with a good mixture of trees, grass, heather and bracken to contend with under foot. And some monumental hills. The area is sandwiched between several minor roads, and you could be forgiven for being completely unaware of it’s existence. We ran along a ridge with the glaciated valley below, with another, higher ridge, opposite. Little did I know that once down in the valley, we would be climbing it.
By the time we got to the valley floor, I was essentially ‘done-in’. I think the technical terms is ‘knackered’. Having covered all 166 acres of the property (or so it seemed) we began to clamber and scramble to the top once more. ‘Insane Greg’ was having a ball, and I could tell he was loving every minute of it, however I was relieved when we started to make our way to the welcoming flatness of the canal tow-path for the 4 miles back to the club. Not that I found this any easier… I was so empty of fuel, it took every last joule of energy to get me back along the path, and back to the club house in one piece. 11.16 miles, done (Runkeeper).
I’m going to rest up for a couple of days, and do little, teeny-weeny runs for Janathon, and give my knees a rest. Today’s run was a bit like eating very hot chili’s. Amazing, but absolute hell at the same time. This is what we do for fun… Weird or what?
